Influences

Thought I would take a post and write about where the guys are this week. First, Ryan. He is totally in love with garage sales. It is something I love to do and it has become something wonderful for us to do together. He gets a pocket full of change and he is in search of cars and trucks and trains. He has been pretty successful lately too. He is learning a lot about commerce and counting. Before we left home on Saturday for the garage sales he lined up all of his cars beside the rocking chair. I asked where they are going in such a nice line. He said they were in line at the donut shop. Each one was waiting a turn to get donuts at the drive-thru. Do we have supreme influence over our kids or what?? Doooonuuuttts.

Lastly, Chase. Chase is basking in the glory of being able to get where he wants to go. It is no longer quicker to crawl and he will jump up and take off. He has a new found love of books. It just happened over night. I believe this influence comes from Ryan. Here is his favorite spot. He even made a nice seat for himself to be comfy.

So, what influence have you had over someone lately? Anyone influenced you?

Kristi Goes to Washington

Well. This is gonna be a long one. I have undoubtedly experienced one of the highlights of my career this week. I just got back from our nation's capitol. Together with a group of other Delta employees (about 50), yesterday I attended a congressional hearing with the U.S. House Judiciary Committee task force and a hearing before the Senate Judiciary subcommittee on Antitrust, Competition Policy and Consumer Rights where Delta CEO Richard Anderson and Northwest CEO Doug Steenland tried to "assuage skeptical lawmakers' concerns about the carriers' proposed combination". We were there as a visual display of employee support for the Delta/Northwest merger and particularly for Richard Anderson himself.

First of all, I just about pee-d on myself when they asked me, as I have adored DC and have always aspired to live there since I was 15. I wanted to be a congressional page and dragged my mother all over town to see Jimmy Duncan (TN Federal House Rep) to encourage him to sponsor me. He didn't and my aspirations of being a page where smashed, however I still love the city, the grand political processes (notice I did not say politicians), and the overall regalness of DC. I was so excited. After I tried on everything in my closet and Darryl helped me dig out the perfect suit and shoes (thanks honey, I know that wasn't any fun for you), I was quickly packed and ready to go.

It is pretty atypical to have 2 hearings in one day. The morning began with breakfast at the Capitol Hill Club, an exclusive club for Republicans. Swanky, swanky, yet very conservative. (Ha) We then ran to the meeting hall to wait in line for the hearing. We had sitters for us. Delta paid some company to provide people to go and sit in line for us from 6AM until we arrived at 8:00. Amazing really. I total them I was highly qualified for that job and I wanted to call Darryl and tell him I found a job in DC, can we move. Before the hearing was about to begin we paraded into the committee room only to find that we had been bogarted by some Northwest employees (adorning their "Say NO to mergers" buttons) and they got our seats. I can tell this is going to be a strained relationship from the start. Several of us were sent to an overflow room and I had to have had a look on my face much like the one of child who has just lost their lovey. Very sad.

We watched it on the big screen for about 40 minutes and then this angel came in and said "come with me." (Thank you Lord for small miracles.) Someone had left the main committee room and there was room for a replacement spectator. All right. I was in. I stood at the back of the room behind a seated Wall Street Journal writer. It was fun watching over his shoulder what he was writing. As I listened to the questioning and answering I was struck by the obscure position these Representatives are in. On one hand they are there to interpret, uphold, and ensure the anti-trust laws are followed to the fullest extent. On the other hand they are representing the constituents of their state. It seems to me, there are some fine lines there in responsibility. There was some posturing and some promotion of totally unrelated issues. But after it was all said and done, I felt that all parties really did present the issues from all sides. The Chairman was brilliant when commenting the committee was going to "keep an open mind", as many of the Representatives had clearly already made up their minds. And as for Richard Anderson, he is a smart man and a very smooth talker. I was a little taken a back though by the few questions he refused to answer directly. There were several promises made that I am unsure he can be held to.

At some point during this hearing I stopped to realize that in all the excitement of the preparation of the trip and being involved in the actual execution of the trip I failed to really sit down to think through which side of this fence I am on. Can I really justify being here with my unconditional support of this mega-merger? Ummmm…. Better sit and think on this a while. This has the potential of being a huge disaster. My entire job centers around continuous improvement, cost reduction/avoidance, and outsmarting the union. At times I feel we get a little brain-washed by corporate, rah, rah, Delta and all that. Should I be getting in line for one of those buttons? Does this merger promising financial viability also ensure employees are going to share in those rewards? Perhaps those that are left. Is this merger really good for consumers given it could spawn more consolidation leading to less competition in the market place resulting in higher prices for consumers? Umm….. And are the unions really all bad given they are just providing a little accountability to ensure the executives of these deals and a few key shareholders don't run away with ALL the rewards? What happens if we don't merge? With fuel $$ the way they are, is there a possibility we go back into bankruptcy, liquidate, and then we are all out of a job? Ummm…… I just don’t know about all this. Gotta get some more facts and data.

After a wonderful lunch at "the club" we went over to the Senate committee room. It was absolutely gorgeous. Mahogany wood paneling from the floor to the high vaulted ceiling. Turquoise marble framed the windows and doors. How nice. The discussion was a little more focused and a lot less redundant. We were interrupted by a Senate floor vote that only took 15 minutes but was pretty cool. Overall, my favorite hearing of the day. Delta employees mingled with Northwest employees for a bit and one of our flight attendants told them "Welcome to Delta." I am guessing they were none to thrilled about that comment. But she went on to reassure them what a wonderful place Delta is to work. We will see. After the hearing, it was back to the Metro to catch the train to the airport. What an amazingly fun day. And aside from having a lot of questions and concerns about the future, I do believe that Delta Air Lines is a first class company and a great place to work. I was very proud to be there representing them and met some amazing people from all over Delta that were there with me. I just hope Delta continues in their legacy.

Darryl accused me to hob-nobbing with "most powerful" people, however I reminded him they may be powerful but there are 3 boys are home that are the "most important" people. With that I was so excited to get home and to pack away the suit. I was anxious to see them and see the new tricks. After all the rhetoric on the heavy issues, I was glad to get home and sing…..If your happy and you know it pat your head. Chasey newest trick. You should see him….Word Up.

So people, what do you think….about mega-mergers, unions, competition in the market place, our political/regulatory processes? Any thoughts?

Breeze

Undoubtably, this was one of the nicest weekends on the year thus far. Yesterday was gorgeous. Not to cool, not to hot, not to much pollen. We played outside a lot and I was reminded of one of my most favorite things. A breeze. Not wind, but a breeze. It doesn't happen often. To me it is just like a big hug from God. It really is amazing and feels so good. I really like watching the trees dance around and listening to the sound it makes. I wish I had more time to stop when coming and going to enjoy them. I was reminded of this especially yesterday. On several different occasions now we have been outside and experienced a breeze and Chase is amazing. He stops and becomes completely still. He stares up at the trees in total amazement. I mean he doesn't move a muscle. Maybe, the wheels are turning and he is trying to figure everything out or maybe God is just using him to remind me of the hug coming my way. I definitely think there is more to breezes than meets the eye. Often wind and breezes are described together with change. Perhaps because they often preclude changes in weather or seasons. I feel is just the opposite. To me breezes are a reminder of consistency. There is and will always be only one God that can make every leaf and blade of grass in my yard move at the same time and simultaneously cause my Chasey to be completely still. Amazing really. Word up.

Special Guests

We had special guests for dinner Friday night. My mother and a dear friend Shirley. It was a gorgeous evening and we had a wonderful time visiting in the yard. Thanks to my neighbor for firing up my crockpot mid-day on Friday, we had a nice meal too. It sounds fancy and tastes fancy, but is easy to make (with the help of a neighbor). Mom and Shirley both requested the recipe, so here it is. I believe I found it on the web somewhere. Good luck.

Pork Tenderloin w/ Au jus

2 lb. pork tenderloin
1 envelop dry onion soup mix
1 cup water
3/4 cup red wine
3 Tablespoons minced garlic
3 Tablespoons soy sauce
ground pepper

Place meat in a slow cooker with soup packet. Pour water, wine, and soy sauce over top, turning pork to coat. Carefully spread garlic over pork, leaving as much on pork as possible. Sprinkle with pepper, cover, and cook on low for 4 hours. Serve with cooking liquid on side as an au jus.

One Jumbo Airline

The headlines on the front page reads, "One Jumbo Airline." Anyone got any comments on the pending Delta/Northwest merger. It sure is big news in Atlanta this week. We will be **America's Premier Global Airline**. Not sure I am qualified to work for America's Premier Global Airline. Actually, should be a fun time. I am thrilled to learn that Northwest flies to Singapore. I have been wanting to get back there. The merger is fine and all, but isn't it really just about the flight benefits. Ryan will really enjoy that 22 hour flight.

Big Questions???

I was watching something random on TV last night and the character said..."now that's a big question." It immediately stuck me as an interesting question to ponder about questions. What differentiates a small question from a big question. Often at work, I guess, it is measured in time. How long is it going to take to explain the question and obtain a response? With kids, I guess it can be the ability the question has to change the impressionable mind away from innocence. Sometimes with our family and friends questions are measured by the time it takes to think about it in order to suggest a response or formulate advice. Ultimately, I decided it was the impact the response has on the person asking. When the answer significantly alters your situation. Some big questions that come to mind..."will you marry me?" (anyone ever thought about how loaded that question is?? amazing, really), "will you work for me, here?", "mommy, why is that spider not crawling anymore?", "friend, what should I do". Even when I think about the small questions; are they really that insignificant that we would call them small? Perhaps, that is why people say "there are no small questions." What big questions have you considered/been asked?

What does Dusty's grandma say in "Pure Country" when George, I mean Dusty, acuses her of never answering a question directly? ..."there are no answers, only the search." ha. I love it..."Pure Country" philosophy. Without questions, there is no search.

Word Up. Tomorrow we are going to talk about answers.

Country From My Head Down To My Boots

I was driving in my car this morning (without the carpool) and a song I haven't heard in a while came on the radio. Barbara Mandrel's "I Was Country, When Country Wasn't Cool." It was the version with George Jones' tid bit at the end. What a classic. This is the song I choose long ago to be the song that sums me up, my theme song, my anthem if you will. I always enjoy hearing that song when it comes on, which is rare these days. However, with just a few chords I was totally taken back. My sisters and I had a Barbara Mandrel 8-track (it was blue) and we would listen to it over and over. I remember each of us standing on a step of the step-ladder in the garage pretending to be the Mandrel sisters singing "You Can Eat Crackers In My Bed, Anytime, Baby". What a great memory. I have always been country, only once or twice have I been cool. (I was pretty cool that day in the garage.)
What's your theme song?

Life's Little Breathers

I would like to stop and reflect today on life's little breathers. This week is spring break all over the city, no traffic, no buses, the boss is on vacation, most of my co-workers are on vacation, the weather is getting nicer, I finished all the chores this past weekend, I cooked over the weekend so that I don't have to tonight, tomorrow night and the next. Ahhh....life's little breathers. Enjoy them when they come and while they last.

'Dan In Real Life'

Anyone a Steve Carrel or Juliette Binoche fan? (We absolutely adore watching "The Office" on TV. Perhaps it reminds us of the ever-so-present quirky co-workers in our own offices, but I'll save that blog for another day.) Darryl rented the movie "Dan In Real Life" last weekend. He said that is was "kind-of a chick flick" but that he really liked it. He saw the first 10 minutes on an airplane. We ended up watching it 3 times over the last week. Either we have been really bored or we are just procrastinating doing taxes. Blockbuster has called us twice to return it, but it is just to good. It is Charming, Charming, Charming, and Hilarious!!! This movie is for anyone who has spent a week/weekend reuniting with umpteen close family members in the same house. Steve Carrel is so funny and Juliette is just Juliette, absolutely charming. One thing I rarely notice in a movie is the music, however this movie has an unbelievable musical score (how is that for a fancy pants comment?). We watched the special feature all about the making of the music. It is that good. It is pretty much all done by one guy and his guitar. For real. I, we highly recommend it. Barring we don't get put in the big house for movie rental theft or tax avasion, we will be seeing it again.

Some of our favorite lines/scenes...."This little piggy went to market….this little piggy stayed home…..", Steve dancing...haha, "we like her so much, if you botch this up, we are keeping her and getting rid of you", "I am an accomplished maker of pancakes", "you are a murderer of love".

One of the interesting conversations in movie is about your perfect day. I think I have asked this question before, but let me tell you one of the reponses given in the movie. "I would like to wake up in a country I've never been before, where I don't understand the language or the culture, and I am just completely out of my element." Have you ever been somewhere where you were completely "out of your element"? Or, on the flip side, have you been presently surprised to be somewhere that was completely "in your element"? Some would argue that the University of Alabma would be completely "out of element" for a Tennessee, no a Knoxville, Tennessee girl. However, I was presently surprised to be right "in my element" for 4 glorious years.

Word up people….go rent this movie!!

Chasy's Yelling.

Another cute Chasy story. By-the-way, I never dreamed when we named Chase, Chase that it would turn into Chasy, however Ryan was calling him that before we even got home from the hospital. It really never crossed my mine. Anyway, back to my story. At dinner Monday night Chase just starts yelling, we all turn to look at him, he preceeds to yell and then starts laughing his head off. We go back to usual dinner conversation, "who did you play with today", "Alexa", "did you play nice", "so-n-so took my dump truck", (serious violation of Ryan's rules of nice play), blah, blah, blah. And then again Chase is yelling, again we all turn to look and he is again hee-hawing at himself. Chase has found his voice!!! Ofcourse, then we start telling Chase to use his "inside-voice" and well, he just thinks that is the funniest thing he has heard. I'm telling you, that Chase is going to be a stinker. This one may be the one Darryl's mother has been waiting all her life for to pay Darryl back for being such a stinker himself. Oh, boy.

If you knew your voice would really be heard, what would you shout out about and to whom?

Chasy's Walking :)

Well, my baby boy's walking. That boy took his first steps just after Christmas and it has taken him 2 months to take off. I am convinced he has had the skill and coordination for several weeks, however the laid-back Chase was taking his sweet time. He has finally made up his mind though that he wanted to be a little more mobile. And he is doing great. I find it fasinating to watch him try new things like turning around on those feet to go another way. Definitely requires some concentration. I am also happy to report Chase is totally off formula and is down to 3 bottles of milk a day. This weekend we are converting to the sippie cups and bottles will be packed away for another day. My little Chase is growing up and I couldn't be more proud. Funny how life changes so drastically in short increments. Chasy's world has just gotten a lot bigger. And mine, well, I will trade preparation-of-bottle-time for running after Chase time. I think I am going to like chasing better...pun absolutely intended. Word Up Chase.

How has your world changed lately??
